Here’s everything you need to know.

Understanding the Rottweiler Coat

Rottweilers have a double coat: a coarse, dense outer coat and a softer undercoat that provides insulation. The coat is short and lies flat — this is why they’re often mistaken for “non-shedders,” when in reality they shed moderately year-round and more heavily during spring and fall seasonal blows. Regular brushing dramatically reduces the amount of hair that ends up on your furniture.

Brushing: How Often and With What

Brush your Rottweiler once or twice a week during normal periods, and every 1–2 days during heavy shedding season. The right tools make all the difference:

• Rubber curry brush or bristle brush – Great for everyday maintenance, removes loose surface hair, and distributes natural oils
• Undercoat rake or deshedding tool (e.g. FURminator) – Essential during shedding season to pull out the loose undercoat before it ends up everywhere
• Soft slicker brush – Good for finishing and smoothing the topcoat

Bathing Your Rottweiler

Human shampoos — even “gentle” ones — disrupt the skin’s pH balance.

• Wet the coat thoroughly before applying shampoo — the dense undercoat resists water
• Rinse extremely well — soap residue is a leading cause of skin irritation in Rottweilers
• Dry completely, especially inside the ear canals, to prevent moisture-related infections

Nail Trimming

Rottweiler nails should be trimmed every 3–4 weeks. Overgrown nails cause discomfort, change the dog’s gait, and can lead to long-term joint problems — a significant concern for a breed already prone to hip and elbow issues. If you can hear the nails clicking on hard floors, they’re too long.

Use a quality pair of guillotine or scissor-style nail clippers, or a rotary grinder for dogs that resist clipping. Introduce nail trims gradually as a puppy by handling paws daily, using high-value treats, and trimming one nail at a time until your dog is comfortable. Ear Cleaning

Check ears weekly for redness, odor, or dark discharge — signs of infection or ear mites. Rottweilers with floppy ears have reduced airflow, making them more prone to yeast and bacterial buildup than upright-eared breeds.

Dental Care

Dental disease affects over 80% of dogs by age 3 and has been linked to heart, kidney, and liver disease. Brush your Rottweiler’s teeth at least 3 times a week — daily is ideal.
